Second Chance is Springing into Action!

Ozzie Loves Springing!

Spring has arrived and the Second Chance Humane Society staff are springing into action to help homeless pets like me have a better chance at a new life.  They have planned an arsenal of ways to help shelter pets like me to find new homes and to reduce our numbers through a multi-tiered approach of spay/neuter clinics, micro-chipping, and adoption events.  Preventing unwanted pets, preventing lost pets, and finding homes for those of us who fell through the cracks…

For starters, on Tuesday April 27, Second Chance will be hosting an extremely low cost spay/neuter clinic in conjunction with the Ouray County Veterinary Services in Ridgway.  Low income residents of Ouray and San Miguel County can have their pets spay/neutered for only $20 (Thanks to Ouray County Vet Services and the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund)!

This is about half the price of the already low prices of the Second Chance Spay/Neuter Financial Assistance Program (which is available throughout the year).  Space is limited for this clinic so contact the SCHS Shelter (626.2273) for details and reservations.

The following day, Wednesday April 28, SCHS is hosting a Community Meeting at the Ridgway Community Center (Town Hall) at 6:30 PM.  Open to the public, SCHS staff and board members will be presenting 2009 program and budget results of as well as discussing future goals and projects.  This is a great opportunity to get questions answered and get to know the team who provide services to the lost, abandoned, and abused pets of our region.

And on Saturday May 1 the 6th Annual Pet Adoptathon is taking place at the SCHS Shelter from 10 AM – 3 PM!  On this special day the shelter transforms into a festive community gathering place with live music, refreshing drinks, fresh baked goods, and pet merchandise.  But most importantly – we hope that many homeless pets will be meeting new forever families.

The Pet Adoptathon is an international event that began back in 1995 as a way to promote pet adoption at a larger scale for shelters across the country. Now over two thousand shelters participate in this event in over 26 countries across the globe, resulting in over a quarter million homeless pets finding loving new homes.  Last year in our small community we had ten adoptions in one day.  We are hoping to beat that record this year…

The SCHS Pet Adoptathon is designed for family and community fun.  All the shelter cats and dogs will be available to visit, go on walks, cuddle, and play whether you are able to adopt or not.  Even if you just stopped by for some fresh baked cookies, a dance around the parking lot, and a quick hi – it would truly show the staff and homeless pets that you care.

Live music will be provided by James O. Patterson, the Rambling Songsmith.  There will also be a doggie obstacle course and other dog and family games and a low cost Micro-Chip clinic (only $25!), so bring your pets along to meet new friends.
