Second Chance Thrift Shop

Tyke - Chief Financial Officer
Tyke – Chief Financial Officer

Hi, my name is Tyke and I am the CFF (Chief Financial Feline) here at Second Chance Humane Society.  As you can see by the elegant tuxedo I wear I take my position VERY seriously.  You might ask, just what does a Chief Financial Feline do?  It is my job is to see that all the animals here at Second Chance are taken care of.  Thus, I am very involved with the Second Chance Thrift Shop where more than 2/3 of the funding for our shelter operations are generated.

You should know that the folks here at the Humane Society are committed not only to giving cats and dogs a second chance but also to helping you give your unwanted goods a second chance. Therefore, the Second Chance Thrift Shop provides a convenient option for the community to recycle unneeded items while also helping animals in need.  Additionally, the Thrift Shop serves as a collection site for aluminum cans.

Since the Thrift Shop proceeds are so important for the continued success of our shelter I want to share with you ways that you can help make it an even greater success.

The Second Chance Thrift Shop accepts donations seven days a week, Monday through Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday noon to 5pm.  While an after-hours drop box is provided for small items, donations are requested during business hours to prevent theft and to help donors identify items that are acceptable for resale.  Donation receipts are provided for all donated items. Please call 970-626-3233 with questions regarding donations.

Items suitable for donation include clean men’s, women’s and children’s clothing in good repair (no stains, missing buttons, rips, etc), books, music, sporting goods, household goods, small appliances and electronics, collectables and furniture. Furniture, large appliance and building materials are accepted only during working hours and must be in top condition.  Please check with a Thrift Shop staff member before donating these items.

While we have found that some electronic items are popular, many others are not.  Among the items that stack up in our dumpsters, are copiers, printers, fax machines and cassette players.  If you have an electronic item you want to donate and are unsure if the shop can use it please check with a staff member.

You may wonder why the Thrift Shop accepts some items and not others. Can you believe that the Thrift Shop spends over $600 a month on trash removal?  Just think how much dog and kitty treats or veterinary care that could afford.   Similarly, we ask that donors not use our dumpsters as this places additional burdens on Thrift Shop trash costs.  The Ridgway transfer station is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1-6 in the summer and 1-5 in the winter.

Alternate donation options for large appliances and building supplies include Habitat for Humanity and the Construction Depot in Montrose.  If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, The Second Chance Thrift Shop is a great way to make a difference in the life of a homeless pet

Like all the animals here at the shelter, I am available for adoption.  I am eager to pass on my feline financial finesse to the next generation and will gladly train my replacement when my forever home finds me.

Call the Second Chance Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet or learn about SCHS Spay/Neuter Vouchers, Volunteer & Foster Care and other Programs.  Visit to see our adoptable pets.  Responses to Pet Columns can be sent to
